I went for my haircut to my favourite barbers recently and the friendly young barber did his very best to chat to me throughout. But he suffered with what I call Teenage Mumble – all the youngsters seem to speak it fluently. Every time he embarked on a little sociable discourse, all I could reply with was, ‘Pardon?’ And he had to try again. Eventually, he got slightly exasperated with me and enunciated every syllable of every word of every sentence very loudly and very slowly: just like I was an old person in fact. When he had completed his handiwork, I paid my 'old person's'  concession and left.
